As the most eminent modern representative of functionalism, Talcott Parsons has been consistently attacked for his neglect of issues of conflict and power.¹ It is therefore of some interest that Parsons should have devoted a number of his more recent writings to a discussion of power and related phenomena, explicit reference to which is conspicuous by its relative absence in the bulk of his earlier works.²
